Kyrgyzstan fighting COVID-19

After the initial outbreak of a new Corona Virus in Wuhan became known to the world, the disease caused by that virus, Covid-19, spread rapidly internationally. Countries in Asia were the first who had to deal with what quickly evolved into a pandemic and they devised different strategies to contain the virus. The strategies themselves and their successes depended on several conditions including available medical and financial resources, the effectiveness of governments, cultural factors which made certain policies more or less acceptable, and community willingness to make economic sacrifices. While it was the same virus which hit each country, the success or failure of containment strategies, and the resulting consequences of these and the virus itself differed from country to country. In this online seminar, Dr. Shairbek Dzhuraev, co-founder and director at Bishkek-based research institute Crossroads Central Asia, will assess the containment strategy in Kyrgyzstan and the expected short-, medium- and long-term consequences of the pandemic in the country.
